Spring grass and laminitis in the UK

Many horses and ponies gain weight quickly when grazing rich pasture, particularly during the spring and early summer. For horses that are prone to weight gain or laminitis, controlling grass intake becomes an important part of daily management.

A grazing muzzle is often used to allow horses to remain on pasture in the UK  while reducing the amount of grass they consume.

Spring grass growth

The time when many horses benefit most from a grazing muzzle is during periods of rapid grass growth. Spring pasture can contain high levels of sugars and nutrients, which may lead to weight gain in horses that are naturally efficient at using food, too efficient we can say!

Ponies, cobs and native breeds are particularly likely to gain weight quickly on lush grass.

Horses prone to laminitis

Horses that have previously suffered from laminitis, or those with metabolic conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome, often need careful management when grazing.

Restricting grass intake can help reduce the risk of laminitis flare-ups, particularly during periods when pasture sugars are high.

Good-doers and easy keepers

Some horses simply gain weight very easily even on moderate pasture. These horses are often described as “good-doers”.

Using a grazing muzzle can slow the amount of grass consumed while still allowing the horse to enjoy turnout with companions.

Introducing a grazing muzzle

When first introducing a grazing muzzle, owners need to begin with shorter periods of wear so the horse can become accustomed to the equipment. Horses usually adapt quickly once they realise they can still graze and drink normally.

Regular checks should be made to ensure the muzzle fits correctly and is not causing rubbing.

Managing grazing safely

A grazing muzzle is only one part of responsible pasture management. Monitoring body condition, providing appropriate exercise and adjusting turnout routines can all help maintain a healthy weight.  See our article on Spring grass and laminitis risk in the UK.

For horses that gain weight easily, controlling grass intake can help support long-term health and reduce the risk of laminitis, I speak from hard experience.
