Skye Fat?  No Way.  I Hate to Tell You What I Did

The farrier told me, the breeder told me, the yard manager told me "Skye is too fat".  She looked fine to me but I hardly dared sent pictures of her to friends, so, and I can hardly bear to confess this,  I Photoshopped her slim.

Of course she was overweight and deep down I knew it and the inevitable happened, one day fetching her in from the field, she could hardly walk - yes laminitis.  This is a vet emergency and so it went on, Skye was on box rest for 9 months as we had nowhere to put her with no grass.

It was horrible and I felt so guilty, still do when I look at her on restricted grass, it could all have been prevented with relevant quick action before things went so wrong.

Don't let this happen to your best furry friend, be vigilant especially in the spring when grass is full of sugar.  Keep an eye on weight and crest, learn to fat score, learn their normals and listen if people say "Too Fat"  as they could be right.

Skye is fine now and lives on a grassless track so I am lucky, maybe you will need the LiteBite grazing muzzle I invented for her, click to see more articles.   I tell this awkward tale to make you hyper aware.  All the best, Celie and Skye
